Update Notice September 1, 1999

On August 25, 1999 our beloved Joan lost her battle against cancer and has gone to be with the Angels in Heaven. Her love and care for the happiness of others along with her artistic and literary talents will be deeply missed by all who knew her, especially her loving husband. The thousands of prayers from people from all corners of the world were greatly appreciated by Joan and she loved to have them read to her in the final weeks of her life here on earth. Thank you all for your prayers and concern for her over the past fifteen months.

Update on Joan’s Condition July 26, 1999

The results of the GAMMA Knife surgery performed on May 5th were inconclusive. The MRI showed increased swelling around the tumor which the doctor feels is probably the result of the surgery itself. However, the tumor size has not decreased and the doctor believes that the surgery was not effective. Meanwhile, Joan is unable to maintain her balance and thus walking is out of the question. We continue to hope and pray for some improvement in her condition. Your prayers and concern for her recovery mean a great deal to Joan and to all of us.

Joan continues to fight the cancer in her body.  We are concerned because she's losing weight.On Wednesday . May 5th she will have a gamma knife procedure done in an attempt to remove three tumors from her brain.These brain tumors must be dealt with quickly and aggressively!

Update on Joan's condition February 9th, 1999

My goodness...how fast the time is going!!

A great deal has been happening. Phil continues to take care of me and we continue to seek help wherever we can. Last week we visited the oncology staff at Sloan Ketering Cancer Research in New York City and I have a strong feeling they will help.

Meanwhile Phil is setting up appointments with brain surgeons, He refuses to accept that the three tumors in my brain cannot be removed surgically.

And he's found a place in Mexico where I would be seen by doctor and the amount of the water required to cure me would be given to us. I'm refusing to travel around Mexico alone and if phil decides it's worth looking into...

Something so painful happened to me the first week of February. I need to share it.

I would like to tell you about my friend 'Senrita Rita,,,Ole!

Ten years ago when we moved here to Woodstown I made a friend. Her name was Rita...

I enjoyed calling her Senorita Rita and she often called me Madame Queen. Rita had the ample figure of a mature Italian woman, black curly hair and flashing black eyes. She was quick to laugh and enjoyed my company as I did hers.

About two months ago Rita began having problems with her nose...it hurt her!

So she started the ritual of ''see this doctor. When I get the results I'll make

an appointment for you to see me and make some decisions.....and on and on it goes....

About bedtime that night Rita called me and told me the surgeons wanted to remove her eye. They had already taken her nose (she had to wear a pair of eyeglasses with a nose, made for her attached to them.

We decided then that Rita and I would meet the next afternoon( safer than night driving for either of us)....so we did and for a little while all was going fine and then I noticed so many people gawking at Rita's face. Anyone who passed by our table gawked!

I think I might have gawked myself...at the site of this beautiful woman wearing diamonds and a Groucho Marx nose.  My heart was aching for her!....soooo......I went into the ladies room and washed off all my makeup. Then I took off the blond wig I had been wearing and stuffed it into my handbag. I also removed my upper denture so I could smile real big at the gawkers!

I didn't know how Rita would react.....how would you have reacted?

 

Rita let out with one big squeal and almost slipped off her seat. We couldn't even eat...we were having such fun! We laughed and laughed!

 

And then it was time to go home. Before I got out of her car she kissed me and hugged me and thanked me for an afternoon of so much fun and she asked if I could get for her a hat...a beret, black...not made from terrycloth....I agreed to try.

The next morning Phil took me for my doctor's appointment, afterwhich I coaxed him to take me to a local department store so I could try to find a hat for Rita. We walked into the store and there was exactly what Rita wanted...I bought it and took it to Rita's house so I could give it to her.

We arrived at about ten a.m. and found that Rita had died some time between 5:30 and 8 that morning.

I was so shocked , couldn't catch my breath. I miss my friend so very much.

I wish I could have been with her....to hold her....to reassure her.
